Various open access publishing possibilities are green and gold, hybrid open access, or APC (Article Publishing Charge), to name just a few. We’ve created a simple A-Z guide to common open access publishing definitions and terms to help you get to grips with them.

About this guide

This step-by-step guide has been set up in collaboration with TiU, as part of the launch of the pilot aiming a full OA repository by 2024. It is the intention to  a create a free-to-access, helping academic book authors to better understand what OP is about, to understand the process at VWE and to challenge them to share more publication in any way, making use of all support and services offered on this platform.

Define your publishing options

Work from end to front

Taking into consideration all the elements coming with publishing OA, requires a better understanding in what they exactly are and how it effects the results. The basic questions to look for answers are:

  1. Why should you choose for opening your work and to what extend?
  2. What rights do you want to licence to the public?
  3. Do you want to put conditions on the use of your work?

Publishing with the 'right' licenses and agreements

When it comes to discuss the terms of the publishing agreements, you will find next to all the guarantees suiting an academic and cultural publisher, also non-conventional yet actual support and services.

When you create original work, in most cases you will be the initial owner of the copyright in that work. However, if the work is the result of research that was covered by a grant or conducted in service of a research institution, you may have an obligation to make the work freely available, in accordance with the open access policy of your funder or the institution.

Publishing & disseminating

About digital and print, marketing and being found

How a publication is re-used and build upon, depends in the first place on the the chosen ‘way’ and the copyrights of licensed books. Aan copyrights of afspraken verbonden publicaties hoeven niet in te boeten aan zichtbaarheid. Especially if you have material that lends itself to online educational material, it is certainly worth making small adjustments to make your audience grow.

Research to reuse

Just because a publication is open access does not mean it is discoverable. But no matter the choice for OA or not, all publications are available in all the places that you would expect to find.
